A meeting of the Berlin Board of Education was held in the Berlin High School library beginning at 6:00 p.m. Present for the meeting were, Nicole Plourde, Nathan Morin, Mitch Couture, Corinne Cascadden, Marion Huntley, Gary Bisson, Beverly Dupont, Dan Record, Amy Huter, Jane Provencher, Roland Pinette, Cheryl Pinette, Georgia Caron, Ken Proulx, Angela Duquette, Tammy Watson, Lucille Lambert, Tom and Kari Sutton, Jon York, Brent Hanks, Candy Boucher, and members of the press.
MINUTES On a motion by Nicole Plourde, seconded by Nathan Morin, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the September 9, 2009 meeting public and non public sessions. The motion passed unanimously.
WARRANTS On a motion by Nicole Plourde, seconded by Nathan Morin, the Board voted to approve the warrants dated September 21, September, 27, September 28, and September 29, 2009 for the amounts of $10,655.68, $10,012.85, $328,670.57, and $147,852.00 respectively. On a roll call vote, all members voted in the affirmative with Mitch Couture abstaining.
FINANCIAL REPORT The Board reviewed the Financial Report.
COMMENTS Candy Boucher requested an additional bus stop be created on the Western Avenue run. The closest bus stop for her daughter is .25 mile; it is not a problem now but she is concerned about when the snow flies.
READING FIRST The Board was given information on the Reading First Conference that four staff members attended in Cincinnati, OH this past summer.
FOCUS MONITOR A presentation was given to the Board explaining the focused monitoring process as well as a summary of the first year activities and end result.
FIELD TRIPS After some discussion a consensus was reached by the Board regarding non athletic school trips. They recommended keeping the decision at the building level based on the cost and the educational value of the trip. Any disputes would go to the Superintendent for review. The administration will bring in suggestions to update the current policy based on this discussion.
SUPER REPORT The Superintendent suggested changing the October 7th School Board meeting to Tuesday, October 6, 2009 immediately following the Joint Meeting with Dummer and Milan School Boards. The Board agreed to the date change.
The Superintendent informed the Board that the Board training on September 30th will be held in the Office of the Superintendent with the Board, Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and a facilitator attending.
The Board was informed that the property on 241 High St was sold in July.
The Board was also updated on transportation.
COMMENTS Tammy Watson, Social Studies Teacher at Berlin High School, asked how quickly a decision on field trips would be made since her class would like to go on a specific trip. Gary Bisson gave the Board more information on the trip. The Board agreed to have the building administration work with current funding and any issues with specific trips going to the Superintendent for resolution.
NEW BUSINESS The Board enjoyed the Focused Monitoring Presentation.
NON PUBLIC On a motion by Nathan Morin, seconded by Nicole Plourde, the Board voted to go into nonpublic session at 7:00 p.m. in accordance with RSA 91-A3II (a), (b), (c). On a roll call vote, all members voted in the affirmative.
On a motion by Nathan Morin, seconded by Nicole Plourde, the Board voted to come out of nonpublic session at 8:30 p.m. The motion passed unanimously. No additional votes were taken in nonpublic session.
